Interview: Knight of Labor

I’m here in Pullman, Illinois and approximately 3,000 employees are on strike in front of the Pullman Palace Car Company. Its a big strike and this is causing a issue and so many other workers are following this strike.

Katherine: Hello may I talk to you?

Worker: Yes

Katherine: Why are are you here and whats going on?

Worker: We are here on strike because the owner George Pullman is continuing to raise high prices and rent in the company town after our wages were cut.

Katherine: Who is here helping you guys?

Worker: The American Railway Union is here to help, they launched a boycott in which some of the union members refused to work the train containing the Pullman cars.

Katherine: Was this effective?

Worker: Yes, because it shut down the production and its now on lock down.

Katherine: Do you think your protest will help get what you guys are fighting for?

Worker: Well we are going to fight till we get this problem solved! We hope that other workers will stop working and follow us. Even if that owner George will have strikebreakers to keep his company working, the labor union and workers will still be here till he hear us out.

Katherine: Thank you for you time.

Katherine: Hello! I’ve been noticing that you have been witnessing this strike, can you tell me what is your opinion about this.

Anonymous witness: This strike has cause some groups within the crowd to became enraged and set fire to nearby buildings and derailed a locomotive. This has all cause for, sympathy strikers prevented transportation of goods by walking off the job, obstructing railroad tracks or threatening and attacking strikebreakers. This increased national attention and fueled the demand for federal action.
