Children Photos: Lewis Hines

In this photograph, there is a child working in a mine with an older man.  Many children were hired to work in mines because they fit better than grown men into the small holes.  School wasn’t an option for many kids.  During the industrial time period, the main reason many kids weren’t in school was because they were working during the day to help their families, because the money both parents were bringing in wasn’t enough.  Many children sold news papers on corners, other worked in mines, or in dangerous factories.  Every job, had its own dangers and many children were often under paid.
